Spotlight: Milatos
Milatos is located a few km east of Sissi and Malia, approximately 30 km west of Agios Nikolaos and 45 km east of Heraklion.
Milatos Beach is a by-the-sea development with many very good fish tavernas, a fishing port and a nice small beach in it. There are other beach areas, but they are very rocky.
In ancient times, Milatos (Militos) was an important city with various colonies, and was one of only seven Cretan cities that sent troops to fight in Troy.

 Situated just few kilometers east of Heraklion the municipality of Gouves is a well-developed tourist resort with long sandy beaches, traditional villages and interesting archeological sites. West of Gouves you will find the tourist resorts of Kokkini Hani and Amnisos with sandy beaches and remarkable archeological sites and to the east you can visit Crete biggest resort Hersonisos.
The village of Gouves lies about 20 km east of Heraklion. Kato Gouves with its long sandy beach is the summer resort just outside the village. There is a variety in accommodation from large hotels to pensions and self-catering apartments and lots of restaurants, bars, nightclubs and all sorts of shops.
At a short distance you will find beautiful and picturesque villages and interesting sights, such as the monastery of Saint John “Theologos”. The Skotino Cave lies about 6 km inland and is one of the largest and most spectacular in Crete. About one km inland from the summer resort of Amnisos (about 7 km from Heraklion city) you will find the mysterious cave of Eileithyia.The most important archeological sights of the area are the Minoan villa in Kokkini Hani and the one in Amnisos. |

 Gouves & GournesPosted by Richard Rae on June 21, 2007I first visited Gournes in Crete, with my girlfriend some 5 years ago. When we arrived, we thought we'd made a mistake as Gournes and the surrounding area was very quiet. After 3 days we met some locals and made friends. If you want a holiday that is quiet and full of the delights of traditional Crete, this is the place! My Friend Nico's Bar (Erasmos) on the main road through Gournes, is fantastic. Always inviting, warm and friendly and Nico will do anything to help your stay in crete, the best experience you've ever had. Sadly not many places are available anymore in Gournes and the main places to stay are in nearby Gouves. Gouves is very nice also, a little more touristy, but great non the less. Since our first visit to Gournes, we were captivated so much by the place, the people and the lifestyle, I proposed to my Girlfriend and we married the next year. We've been back every yeear except this one, and this was because we've had a baby boy.
We are planning to take him over to see our old friend Dascalos and spend some time with the people we love, in the place we love... Crete!!!
Go to Gouves, don't think about it, just do it! while your there, visit Gournes, use its facilities, buy its goods, these people are wonderfull!
