Kolymbari is a beautiful village, built in a gulf, 23 km West from Chania, with 1008 residents. Its houses unfold themselves into a large green area. It is an important tourist attraction. Recently it has acquired international fame because of the congresses and other events that take place with epicentre the Orthodoxe Academy of Crete. From its anchorage the landing of the Turks was made in 1645 that led to the subjection of Crete. At the same point in 1897 the secret landing of the Greek army with Timoleonta Vasso also took place in order to protect the Greek population of Crete, a landing that became the reason for the declaration of (1897) the Greek-Turkish war. | |
